From my technical viewpoint I'd have to say yes.

I'm sure DJ, Meph, Darth Walt (where is he?) may have different ideas.

memory and motherboard, could be either one.

I've had bad ram that caused problems with games, replaced
the memory and it worked great.

then I had a bad motherboard that caused similar problems.

Starforce.  What game did you install?

Hl2

oblivion
had to remove them to defrag
then rinstalled fear and oblivion and fear has a nearly 4 GB chunk that will not defrag
when hl2 was intalled there was 14 GB i couldn't defrag
all game files

What's your definition of a fragmented file? ?Even after you defrag, you'll still have some files that will be slightly fragmented, especially if they are larger. ?Is your hard drive nearing capacity? ?If so, that will limit your ability to do a good defrag.

Eliminate the possibility of a memory problem by taking one stick out if you have more than one. ?Use the computer for a while and see if the problems persist.

Does the hard drive seem to be running slower than usual? ?If it is, maybe it's on its last legs.

the defrag wasnt a serious issue at first
then when hl2 dm would not load and css froze in game online
i was a bit concerned i let the comp check my memory on the reboot
and its error free according to boot screen
defrag used to allways have one or two small files that would never defrag like sys.log
but my games would always defrag
