Action Pack is available to any MS Partner with a valid Tax ID.  It costs $299, then costs an addition fee to keep it each year.  Every quarter you get a new booster pack with all the fixes and patches (at least you used to, I'm not sure how it works now).  Your initial shipment includes 10 copies of Vista Business and Office 2007, plus varying amounts of licenses for most of the Microsoft core product lines - server, SBS, Sharepoint and a bunch of other stuff.  Works out to 5 digit dollars of software.  It used to be the Select program (which may or may not exist) and is Microsoft's way of getting companies to reign in casual piracy.  For the cost of 2 copies of Windows Business, most small companies can load their entire network and keep it updated.

Meph's got it right.  You don't get fixes/patches every quarter, but you do get whatever software has been released during that time.

If you missed it on the main news page>
http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2174211/microsoft-won-patch-vista

"As vnunet.com reported last week, users can install the upgrade version of the new operating system as a fresh installation, even if they do not currently own a licensed copy of Windows XP."

"The procedure is time consuming, but allows users to save about 35 percent of the purchase price for the regular Windows Vista."

I'm liking it better than XP so far.  All the apps that I use regularly work.  Some have glitches, but nothing that makes them unusable.

"Does not allow" does not mean that if you change more than one piece of hardware, you have to buy a new license for Vista.  It means that you *may* have to re-activate it, the same as XP.

In my many, many, many PC upgrades (both my own and for my customers), I've never had a problem re-activating Windows.  At worst, you have to spend a few minutes on the phone if you've activated too many times recently.

Neither have I.  I think most of those re-activation horror stories are bunk or FUD, or the result of people not knowing what they're doing.  Think of amateur mechanics and the obscure problems they encounter with their cars.

Still, my only reasons to upgrade would be DX10 (I'm stoked about the geometry shaders; I'm a simpleton and fancy graphics impress me) and the slow death of XP.  I really don't care about Aqua Aero.

Besides, it may be a little while before all my favorite OSS programs are up to snuff--foobar2000 ftw!

A little off topic, but I love Foobar. replaces winamp, I-tunes and WMP for me.

I'm seeing alot of customers mad because their printers don't work for Vista and there are no
Vista drivers available available for it... HP seems to be doing better than most though.
Its the win98 to XP situation again.  ...but these problems will be rectified eventually.
