linux in a vm

Well, some may disagree.. but linux isn't the greatest for gaming, as most publishers don't write for linux.  Unless you want to play the Quake series ;)

anyway, if you're new to the OS, I'd just slap Ubuntu in a VM and get a feel for it.   You can the run games even like "Portal" in WINE (a Win32 Emulator) which defeats the purpose but hey :)
emmmmmm; tastes gooood!

Also, just so you know...running games inside of a VM is not advised. It's never a fun thing.
Wine and Caldega are your best bets for gaming. There are pluses and minues to both. I've used both on several occasions and it depends on the game as to how well it will run.

For WINE if you look at their page and locate the AppDB it's easy to get an idea of how well your games will run.

I disagree.  There is a tool called Cedega for linux that lets you play directx games under linux ( emulated ).  Even though it is emulated, it still has wonderful performance.  I use to play World of Warcraft exclusively on a linux box running gentoo, and it got much better performance then than it did running under windows on the same machine.

Cedega is not compatible with all directx games.  Cedega does not support DX10.  Cedega is notorious for how bad its support is.  Cedega is not free.

While the most popular MMORPG happens to run under Cedega, it is by no means the only MMORPG, and many of the more popular non WoW games have issues.

Saying Linux is gamer ready is just blowing smoke up people's ass.

Yeah, I suppose those are good points.  WoW was the only big game I ever tried on Cedega, so I can't vouch for how well it works with other games.  It's not really that expensive though if you're serious about gaming in Linux, as it costs less then the average game does anyway last time I checked.  I never tried their support, so I don't know how well it is either, so I can't comment on that.  As far as DX10 goes, XP doesn't support it either, and the overwhelming majority of users are still using it instead of Vista, so no big deal there.

The *biggest* minus for Cedega is that you have to hope someone in the community or on the dev team has fixed it to work with your particular game.  Saying it runs DX games is really really misstating the situation.

Well, my only point about DirectX was that wine does not support DirectX games, only OpenGL Games.  So if you want to play games using DirectX under windows, Cedega is pretty much your only option.

I think linux needs a marketing ploy, like how consoles booted straight to the game you want to play, you could use linux to make a boot cd and send it straight to your game, you wouldn't need to worry about compatible Operating systems and it could have the drivers that you need right on the disk

I don't think there will be much depth to Linux gaming until someone creates and maintains serious, native tools for Linux game development.

I've always liked Tux racer. :D

Yeah, I suppose, you're right, I mean Quake 3(iirc) and TacOps had linux support. But then again, those are games that are not really played anymore.
