XP or Vista
« on: August 19, 2007, 05:13:54 pm »
so im finally getting close to ordering thing for my new computer.  I decided to go non sli, cause i dont think im really ever going to be that extream into gaming. If i want to, i can always upgrade i guess.  So now it comes to operating systems.  I know vista supports dx10 and xp doesent.  But i also know vista is a source hog.   So knowing that all of you are computer gods, what should i get?  I know crsis using dx10, but is there that HUGE, of a difference?  I used a buddy comp last night.  He had an 8800 in it and was using dx10 for city of heros.  THe graffics where good, but not like... damn.   So im kinda stuck on what one to go with.

you can play Halo 2 on XP, look for the crack.
(of course you should only do that if you *own* the game and I'm not posting a link to it)

They made it "Vista Only" to try and force people to buy it. But it works fine on XP.

I've heard that Vista uses up a lot of system resources just to function...I'm sticking to XP; but I'm sure you get a good deal with Vista bundled right?

Now that NVidia has released solid drivers for Vista, I haven't had any problems.  I love the new search, the sidebar, and 'previous versions' of files.

As far as resources go, I'd say the most important thing is RAM.  You can get away with 1GB, but I'd recommend 2GB if you want a smooth-running system.

Dont even think of Vista without 2 Gigs of Ram , The alternate is a USB stick with ready boost .

Vista has been nice to me so far , Most of my stuff works fine . The gadgets are really nice [yes gadgets !!!  ] . Aero is nice .

My only gripe has been , I get more choke on css on vista than on XP .
There is fee of  $.50 for reading this post . PM me for payment details .

Vista is a good option ONLY because you can expect more "Vista Required" games in the near future.  Yes there is a crack for Halo 2, but that wont always be the case.  I would not use Crysis as a level of comparison for anything.  Crysis is not a game, it is a tech demo.

With respect to Vista being a resource hog, well it is.  But there are simple steps you can take to reduce the OS thumbprint.  I would recommend looking at http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm .  These are relatively safe and easy ways to reduce the Vista overhead.

Have been using Vista ultimate (64) on the laptop for a while, pretty good, had a bit of a networking issue with an XP base machine but all worked out.
Can't get a lot of the free stuff for 64bit though, like AVG and other utils
Oh the silly younglings

Between XP and Vista I say go with XP. I had Vista Ultimate and used it for a month or so before I got tired of all the issues and slowdowns I was getting. That and the latest WGA verification problem where people with valid installs where getting the message stating your a theif and disabling portions of all of their systems.

I so love my new Linux install, and I have Vista to thank for it. If Vista wouldn't of been so crappy I wouldn't of tried Linux again (and finally love it).

Okee so I've used Vista, but it doesn't like it anytime you chang ANY hardware.  Also it's got a lot of bugs, crashed 5 min. after it was installed.  Most of my games won't work on it.  I stuck Vista on a laptop and the laptop runs cooler.  It also seems better at multitasking, but I wouldn't get it until they've had a chance to work more of the bugs out.
