The machine won't use it, but there's nothing wrong with a little future proofing while RAM prices are so low.

meph said it best, DDR3 is going to be the new standard soon. when this happens... the same thing that happened to DDR and SD ram will happen to DDR2. prices will make you want to scream!  :tickedoff:

DDR3 isn't even worth it.  There's too much legacy between the RAM and the CPU.

i agree, but from what ive seen thats how all new ram technology starts out. like 400Mhz DD2? are you kidding?  higher latency timings and the same bandwidth as DDR.

but then the bandwidth gets higher and higher then it becomes overall faster ram.
but thats just from what i read.

ether way i dont plan on upgrading to DDR3 any time soon. if anything ill be getting 2 more Gigs of DDR2 while the price is tasty...  ;)

Agreed. And if you have 4 Gigs in your machine, XP32 will at least recognize 3 Gigs of it. So that's definitely an improvement over a 2 gig kit. Also, DDR-800 prices are ridiculously low, and if you have anything other than an Intel X38 or high-end P35 mobo (The brand-spankin-new Nvidia 780 mobos still use DDR2), now is the time to buy DDR2.

32 bit is fine for everything.  But if you are talking Vista, I don't know (or care) which you should get.  I'm avoiding vista for awhile so I don't know much about it.

I am considering vista but also do they not have a 64 bit XP pro? , I know if you go 64 bit you loose the ability to get a lot of the internet freebe software like AVG and stuff

Yes, totally worthless since the OS can't address it.

I have xp64 bit pro I like it and you get two options when using the IE. one for 32 and 0ne for 64 so I see no loss and it runs well.
I have a copy of 64bit vista but I think I am going to wait to try it out.  Because I am haveing no problems with 64 bit xp I say if it anit broke don't

I've been using Vista x64 for almost a year.  The main problem I experienced when I first began using it was poor performance in games and poor hard drive performance.  These problems were caused by poorly written chipset and video card drivers.  I think was around April when Nvidia finally got it right.

Since then, I've had no problems running Vista.  I'm trying out the SP1 beta, and I have noticed improved speed when copying files over the network, and hard drive performance.  I also have Vista on my laptop.  I installed it back in May, and am still using the same install without the infamous "xp slowdown".

If you've got the hardware, then personally I see know reason not to use Vista.
