and I always thought a dmz was a demilitarized zone.  Guess that's why people don't call me a hacker.   

Hehe, even in computing terms, that's what it means.  Although the computer is connected to the Internet via a router, it will act as if it were connected directly to your Internet connection.

it also means that for routers; basically all ports are open to that computer. it's not considered wise security policy.
