OpenOffice also supports pdf and doc export, Gene.

Well, then, Gene...  Stick with Microsoft.  Symphony is just Openoffice rebranded for IBM.  Frankly, Gene, you have a choice to make.  Do you want pretty but outrageously expensive and featureless, or do you want functional with a *standard* interface...  the same interface Microsoft only moved away from a couple years ago...

Seriously, man, OO uses almost exactly the same interface as all Office versions up to that stupid looking Office XP.

Oh, and Mike... Tell your buddy his load balancing setup sucks ass.  This is IBM, they should NEVER be brought down by something like the Slashdot effect.  EVER.

This is kinda off topic, but...

has the performance of OO improved in the past couple years?  It didn't run too well for me in its first few releases--have these issues been addressed?

No choice. I want pretty AND functional AND free. I know OO uses the old interface, but I'll need to learn the new interface because all the law firms use office (now 2007).

Is that too much to ask?

Yes.  You should just go ahead and keep paying 400 bucks a pop every time a new Office release comes out.

Raven, what are you talking about?  Gene effectively shut down any other options than him staying with MS Office.  There's nothing to argue.

Believe it or not, we can have friendly disagreements on this site.

You need to calm down, raven, and start remembering that this is a very un-serious place.

Quorn, it runs well, now.  It still isn't the fastest application ever, but it is miles faster than OO 1.x was.  Of course, I have a blazing fast comp compared to back then

I am going to beat you senseless with a baseball bat in TF2.

whatchoo mean?

If your telling me about the slow ass website I told him that when i tried to load it.

but the OS sucks (take a guess at which one) and is overriding the switches speed and duplex settings -- switch is at 100/Full, OS is making it 10/Half -- working on scripting a solution to fix  L _ _ _ x's deficiencies

what the OS is doing is this:

the switch is hardcoded at 100/F,  the OS "was" set to autoneg the duplex and speed and picks up 10/H.    it happens on every implentation of RHEL i've seen, and on any server with any sort of nic, so I know it isnt a driver issue.   it's a simple script fix utlizing ethtool -s .......... but just stupid that the OS is autoneg'ing to an arbitrary state rather than setting itself to what the switch is set at

This is a bit of a major release.  Even if the network is chugging because of misconfiguration, he should have a couple more blades taking some of the load to help compensate.
