Collaboration for TF2 map?
« on: November 08, 2007, 11:53:42 pm »
Source SDK was updated for TF2, Portal and Ep2.

Anyone want to design a layout for a TF2 map?
I'm not so good at planning or layouts, but I can build stuff and make
custom models.

If anyone is interested, post or PM me the details.

It is really new to me, so I don't know the entities yet, but I'm mainly concerned about
the map itself and placement of CPs right now. The rest I can learn later.

I would recommend using Inkscape (vector work) for easy manipulation of designs.
http://www.inkscape.org/

but you can use what you want, draw it if you wish on paper and scan it in, I'm easy.

I'll work on something when I have the time. Post a layout within a week.

cool.

I'd like to start slow, so nothing too crazy like the inside of a submarine
or a putt putt golf course.

That might me cool, don't know how it would fit with the TF2 theme,
but I can try it.

I would like to help but I'm not sure if I can be of much value.  I will look into inkscape and some layouts and see if I can come up with some ideas.  I find it interesting but I have never done anything like this.

Notice the differences from the last pic.
As you can tell, it's somewhat easy to change.
Took me five minutes.

I was bored, ok?

I would like to know what is possible. Example:

Capture all 5 control points and then steal the intelligence and capture it to win the match.

3 capture points. Blu attacking, red defending. After A and B are captured, Blu intelligence is spawned (or a chamber opens and makes the intel accessible) at A or B. Blu must try to capture C while keeping Red from capping the intel. If intel is capped, Red wins. If C is capped Blu wins.

A map done completely underwater. There was an Unreal Tournament map where all the rooms were under water and you had to be careful not to drown by using moonpool type entrances into the underwater rooms. One team spawned above the water, jumped in and swam down to the rooms. The other team spawned in one of the underwater rooms and prepared defense.

I'm going to need some time with Inkscape, I guess.  Kind of embarrassed with what I could do in five minutes.  I have a couple of decent ideas I will PM you when I get a little farther.

It takes awhile to get used to, if you need any help let me know.
I had someone showing me how to use it, so I cheated.

Working with vector is a lot different than working in Photoshop (or other graphics program).
You work with points and curves. I'll have to try my hand at making a tutorial and giving some
sample .SVG files later on this week.

I will work with it as much as I can and try to get a layout next week.  I have idea for something similar to Granary with a Old West feel.  A street with buildings and alleys lining it.  I need to come up with some ideas to keep the snipers in check though.  I am afraid they would dominate with the street being too wide open.

Hostage protection is looking like a good career choice

Making another Granary clone will probably assure it of not being played on our server.
