I stick to the Debian based distros because of how awesome apt-get is.  Before Ubuntu struck, I used Mepis - that was after fighting with plain Debian for awhile.

Oh, for those that may have heard of Xandros or Linspire (these are two commercial Linux distros, Linsire is actually pre-installed on many Walmart PCs), they are both Debian based, and each has a varying degree of ease of use that even Ubuntu doesn't quite get.  Have to pay for the full version, tho, thanks to Linspire's busniess model, and Xandros' inclusion of Cedega.

I was reading up on Cedega, sounds like it could be worth looking at

It has very poor support at this point, from what I have heard.

i am considering running Linux. never had too much exp with it. the laptop im considering running this on is a Dell Latitude L400

the specs:

700Mhz PIII

256Mb pc100

Ati mobility 4Mb

hard drive is currently being upgraded.

anyway is there any one on here that is a Linux user that could tell me why to or not to use a Linux OS vs win 2000 pro OS? the main purpose for this laptop is portable internet, media use and maybe simple games.

thanks for your time...

Hey, if you make it to the LAN gig, I can hook you up with a WAY better machine.

For the sake of spreading linux, I could unload one of my P4 2.8ghz 2GB Ram 36gb SCSI disk workstations with decent DVI graphics, runs the GUI well too :) :) :)

I agree with Meph..  Debian is a great distro to learn with.   You can take the easy install road and run Ubuntu, but you don't really appreciate the OS unless you actually go through a less intuitive installer, format your disk after reading what partitions mean and what size they should be, etc.    Stormgren and I have been running Linux since 1995 :P

If you need any help, you know where to find us :)

emmmmmm; tastes gooood!

Well, with such incredibly descriptive symptoms like "can't get it to run" I am sure we will be quick to help... :P

yea yea,  :P

no the laptop simply will not see the cd a bootable media on startup and just loads win2k. when i try to run the cd from win2k it just gives me a error and says a log was created.

on top of that i cant seem to figure out how to burn a "boot disk"

The Xubuntu ISO that you downloaded should already be bootable.

Did you burn it at max speed? If so try slowing the speed down on the burn. What does the W2k error log state?

cant remember off hand (im at work right now). it was pretty much straight forward error...

something like " this program encountered a error and will now shut down. a error log has been created " ill check the log when i get home.

thats what happens when i click on the "boot.exe" file with the xubuntu logo on it while using win2k.

the cd just wont boot from startup. the only thing i can think of is maybe downloading it from another mirror. or try burning the one i already have at a slower speed like you said

Keep in mind that some machines need you to actually go into the BIOS and tell them to boot from the CD first.
