I always liked gentoo linux, but it can be a pain to setup, as everything is usually compiled ( and I mean pretty much everything ), but it makes it run smoothly, since everything is optimized on your machine.  I think last time I installed it, it took me about 8 hours to compile x-windows and KDE.

It has a really nice package installation system called 'emerge' that calculates dependencies for you and auto configures and compiles packages for you.

Somehow if I had to guess your Linux, I probably would have said Gentoo..  (damn spies)  hehe

I started on Slack in 96? gave it up for Redhat until they went REALLY corporate, ventured out of linux and played with the BSD's between 99 and 2002... and I've been running Debian ever since.

What does spies have to do with gentoo?

I started out with RedHat in college, then I moved on to Slackware and tried it for a while.  A fried of mine recommended gentoo, and when I tried it, I didn't want to move to any other gentoo after it, since I like it so much.

That being said, nowadays I spend almost all my time in windows instead of linux.  Being a .NET developer, I'm pretty tied to windows at this point.

Yay for .Net development. Glad to find another .Net developer around here. Still trying to wrap my head around  LINQ.  :-\

Yeah, LinQ is pretty different.  It reminds me a lot of Hibernate/NHibernate, but I don't like it that much.  It seems like taking a step back towards inline SQL again.  I much prefer the ADO/TableAdapter setup myself.

lol, but that defeats the purpose of trying to make things do things that they were originally not supposed to do

WINE is great, and runs the things it runs well for the most part.  Make sure you check the winehq database for stuff you want to run.

WINE is installed... ubuntu seems more sluggish than the Xp install.  :(

i turned the visual settings to minimal but didn't really help the snappiness of opening programs or clicking on tabs.

the "task manager" uses 8-15% CPU usage by its self when opened...

i dont know, the hardware isnt that bad.

-2Ghz AMD turion L2 1Mb
-1 Gb RAM DDR 333Mhz
-ATI 200M 128Mb
-120Gb WD IDE 8Mb

oh well installed steam fine. now installing TF2....

Ubuntu on that machine should be blazing fast.  You have something going on.

im looking for different chipset/video drivers right now. i currently cant run any source games. but have no problem running other valve games before the source engine.
