Gnome or not to Gnome
« on: March 15, 2008, 08:24:48 pm »
Which do you use, I prefer KDE.

Also a quick question, does anyone know if KDE or gnome would be easier to learn for a linux newb (*looks at Trigg*).

Forgot the 2nd part of the question.

Which *nix distro would be a good start off distro. I learned with Mandrake, but then I ventured into Gentoo.

Ununtu or Kubuntu.  Debian based (the best distro)

I prefer kDE myself, though I don't have any real reason for why I do.

Most people I know that were just starting out used Red Hat, which the free version is now the Fedora Project.

To be honest, whenever I need to use a Linux machine (I use the ones around campus, but they all have centralized user settings for me...which I looove), I use KDE because it looks and feels a little fresher to me. Really, it's up to personal preference. I'd suggest just trying a distro that supports both, deciding which you like better, and then using Ubuntu or Kubuntu based on which one you like.

I found KDE to be a little closer to a Windows than Gnome.  I tend to prefer it for that reason, but Gnome is actually a little more user friendly and better looking for someone that isn't going to be digging in to the configs too much.

That's probably the main reason I like KDE.
