I think am good for now.  The drive my OS is on right now is only 30gb so I would like to rely on the other drive(160gb, partitioned 50gb and 110gb) for programs and storage but if the sectors are corrupting it might not last long.

This is actually how I prefer setting my machines up, even with good HDDs.  The smaller drive with the OS on it is much easier to ghost/nt backup to keep backups in case your OS install gets borked.  Plus if you actually have two different physical disks ( vs. partitioned space ), you get better performance, since windows ( and more importantly, your page file ) and your applications don't have to fight over the same HDD.

the man has got a very good point. the only down side is if that 30Giger is a slower 5400rpm or has way less cache than than one you where using before. other than that it would be a very good idea to run 2 HDDs and since your already in the habit of using different partitions it really wont be any different from what your used to, just faster.

Good info thanks guys.  I always partitioned my HDD so I can keep all my music, pictures, documents, etc. on a different partition than my OS.  So when I reinstall the OS I don't have to sweat having to transfer all of my files or losing them all together.  I think in the future the two HDD set up will be the way I go.

The HDDs are the same speed and cache so no big deal there.  Everything seems to be working well again.

very odd and bizarre... can't install windows SP3!! at the end of the installation, it says installation has been shutdown, rolling back to previous service pack and then I see the removing files, reinstalling backup files etc etc...  :o and of course, MS tells us that they are sorrrrrry... yeah **ckhead...

I am not sure. I just roll back my Forceware to 169 since I recently had problems with the nv4_disp.dll (BSOD)... maybe SP3 fixes something to get work with the 175.

no, i mean your not missing anything by staying with SP2. SP3 is buggy for many and does not really offer any performance gains over SP2. its mostly just networking features (from what i heard).

the only way that it seems to work 100% error free is if its installed with a windows xp SP3 disc from Microsoft (fresh re image of the hard drive).

when you reinstalled windows, did you choose the option "quick format"? if you did this may be why you ran into problems with your new install (not with SP3).

when ever i reinstall windows i use the normal format. it takes longer but gets rid of all the old crap (not really but windows doesn't see it any more).

Doesn't matter.  A quick format drops a new NTFS or FAT table on the partition.  As a result, the prior install can't find the data anyway, it's got nothing but a new blank file table.  The normal format does do the bad byte block checking, that's true, but a quick format for the purposes of making the old data go bye-bye works just fine.

Zeroing out the drive or doing a normal doesn't really gain you anything, it's a oft-repeated thing that I keep running across as gospel for completely clearing a system, but it doesn't really matter.

well if all u do is stick a new ntfs format on there you can use a ghosting program to recover the data, all ur sensitive data is still there, and I vouch for zeroing or the hammer remedy when disposing of old hd's

@ Stormgren

you might be going above my head on this one. but i just remember the one time i got lazy and something bad happened because i did a "NTFS quick format" when installing windows XP.

friend A needed a laptop.

friend B had a laptop to sell.

i was the middle man.

got the laptop from friend B, formatted as said above, installed drivers and gave the laptop to friend A. later the next day i got a pretty angry phone call from friend A.

turns out Friend B liked male gay porn, it also turns out that the "NTFS quick format" leaves all gay porn in the my documents folder for friend A to watch.  :buck2:

if only friend A was gay man this might have been cool.

anyway ever since, as good measure i just stick with the normal NTFS format when installing XP.

oh and just for clarification, i install XP by booting from the CD not from inside windows.
