turns out Friend B liked male gay porn, it also turns out that the "NTFS quick format" leaves all gay porn in the my documents folder for friend A to watch.  :buck2:

Then it didn't format.  It is possible to boot off the CD and reinstall XP without reformatting the drive.  And it's very possible, with all the dumb questions XP asks when you're about to reformat something to have skipped the format and just installed, even if you selected the quick format.

I tested this with a prior install of XP this past week, when I got issued a new laptop and needed to reload it.  Quick format nuked the NTFS tables and I was left with just windows on the hard drive.

yea i guess that particular disc i have just doesn't "format" with the quick option unless you delete the original windows partition and created a new one before starting the quick format.
