...or you could just disable UAC.  It's the thing that keeps giving you the Allow messages.  It should be under Control Panel-> User Accounts-> Turn User Access Control on or off.

ic. i think i did something of that nature when i disabled defender. i no longer get any "do you want to allow this?" boxes. which is nice. it still updates it definitions every few days so im not sure its totally disabled unless it just vista seeing definitions as updates. aside from that i have AVG running. so i guess im ok in the security dept.

it was free. i had to try it out.  :)

i do like it so far. might just be the 64bit aspect but hey regardless its much faster than my 32bit Xp install.

I was really impressed by vista seriously. maybe because I was hearing too much that it was really bad, so when I tried it out, my expectations were so low, it was actually way higher than my expectations. somehting like that :)

that makes perfect sence... and thats kinda how i feel. once i turned off the annoying pop up thingy... lol.

i think the biggest prob with vista was that so many PCs sold with it pre-installed just flat out where too slow to run it properly.

That and there were some early bugs and a lot of BSODs before they patched the hell out of it.

I have three drives in my main machine, loaded with XP, Vista 64 Ultimate, and Windows 7.  My Vista partition has started locking up.  My Windows 7 partition is dead - I can't even log on to it.  I've left it be for a couple of weeks, but now my XP partition is telling me it wants a fresh install.  So I just started the install of Vista again.  Need to have a stable OS before anything else like beta testing.  I'm thinking I will wait for the W7 RC1 to drop before reloading W7.

What do you think caused the failures to spread between drives?

Nothing so sinister.  I beat the hell out of my OS.  I'm constantly messing with things.  They didn't all fail at once, its been weeks since I was stable on Vista, and a good week or two since I've been able to use my W7 partition.

not to beat a dead horse but, don't rule out South Bridge errors form over heating. maybe just re-seat the heatsink with some fresh paste to be sure.
