using Vista Ultimate here, no complaints.  Nice and fast, even with 1 gig of ram.

well it's been recommended to run with at least 2 gigs, but hell, who listens to all that. :p

I do. 2GB on my laptop and 4GB (installed, not all used) on my desktop. I plan to move to 64bit soon, at least to dual-boot, and then I'll get to have all 4 happy gigs. :)

in 64bits you can have a LOT of mem but because of chipsets you got 8Gb max? maybe I will take vista 64bits... because my XP is... well... not legal

As long as they operate according to the same specifications, you're fine.  "Matched Pairs" is mostly hooey.

to my knowledge its all about the chips used to make the ram. (most all ram companies get their chips from the same chip makers) but advances in the DDR technology makes some ram not work with others.

exmp. i have 2 sets of DDR2 made by OCZ. one set is a 2GB (2x1Gb) 667Mhz, the other is a 2GB (2x1Gb) 10667Mhz. the 1066 set is made from micron D9 chips. the 667 set is made from (i think) micron 7. my mobo wont even post to the bios (just loud beeps) with both sets installed no matter what speed or voltage i try to boot up with.

you have to be careful with that too. sometimes the model you order is not what you get because the sales dept and the inventory dept are not on the same page and you end up getting the latest rev of something instead of the exact model listed. sorry.... its mostly a DDR2 thing.

i would just do a little research before hand. search for the ram you already have and see if you can contact a websites support to confirm its the same.

if you go thru some newegg reviews you will see what i mean.

i would, at least ask if they have ever made a revision to the model number of the ram you have. if so get some details and ask if your ram would be compatible with any of the other revisions. just to save you some RMA time.  ;)

ive even heard of some companies exchanging old revisions for the newer ones because to many customers complaining when they try to add more ram later cant because there is no more of the older stuff on the shelves.

to my understanding this error is mostly on the mother board side of things. some mobos don't care and are more flexible to running different dimms but when it really comes down to it the ram companies are the ones that end up looking bad.

just go an answer from Corsair: they say it is not recommended to mix up kits of mem. they cannot be responsible for the perfomance obtained.  :-\ they say AT LEAST get the same voltage, specs, and timings but even with that they can't recommend to mix up kits  :(
