Internet connection question
« on: July 29, 2008, 05:01:31 pm »
thinking of changing internet service i have 2 choices
now I'm not sure but I'm going to guess download speed is more important than upload speed

choice #1 download speed 6999 kb/s
              upload speed 508 kb/s

choice #2 download speed 3290 kb/s
              upload speed 1169 kb/s
                                                        hellllllllllllllppppppppppp

im not the most experienced one here (im sure) on this subject. but i would go with  the second if it were me. ive had the 7Mb/5Kbs before at my old place. nothing was wrong with it. but i think that i never used all the down stream bandwidth.

for exmp.

the fastest i ever received files was thru steam (800-900Kbs). i went from a 6.5Mb connection to a 14.5Mb connection at my new place and seen like maybe a 100Kbs boost in those same downloads.

so unless you download a lot of stuff every day i would go with the one with more up stream to be more balanced. i think you might see lower ping as well.

but this is all a guess based on my exp.

I would need to know a bit more, dw.  what kind of connections are we talking?

Cable tends to be much more reliable than DSL for continuous data transmission - like playing games.

If your choices are between two DSL plans, download speeds tend to be more important to me personally.  Neither download speed nor upload speed will effect your ping or how well you connect to the server, unless you drop your speeds *too* far.  Neither of those plans are two slow for a solid gaming connection.

Like Anomaly says, i can only go by experience, and from what I have seen, I would say just make sure you are on a cable connection.  other than that, just try plans until you get the one you like and that gives you good pings.

since this is a internet connection problem post... im going to hijack it.   Anywho... Im wondering why my ping on CSS is higher than it was when i was back in minnesota.

My connection at home.  1.5mbps-dsl
ping 55-65
My connection in colorado. 5mbps-cable
ping 85-100

Now downloading is happening.  I have firewall and antivirus turned off.  I have reset my router and modem.  What else can be done?

i think ping gets higher the farther you are from the thing your "talking to".

oh yea... it could be a setting too. once with out changing locations my ping went from like 40-50 to like 80-90. raven told me to turn something off on my router and it helped...

raven.....  where are you?

It isn't necessarily distance.  It is more a matter of how much stuff is between you and your destination.  When you connect to our server, it isn't like you get a straight pipe to Dallas.  It goes from your machine -> your router -> your cable company's local hub -> the next gateway on your cable company's network -> the cable company\higher tier provider's connection gateway system 9which can be more than one router) -> through several more routers and junctions -> Savvis network's gateway -> router local to our server -> server.  The further away you are, the more likely that there are more hops in that chain.  If you live with a large geological break in the terrain (say, mountains or a major river) you can add even more hops.

Jader, when you are at home, do this:

click start
Click Run
type cmd and hit enter
type tracert killazinc.net and hit enter.

it will list off your hops and what your ping is as it goes through them.  I bet your Colorado connection has more hops.

It is only bad if it effects your ping :D .  I bet your connection from home has more is all.  I am at 8 hops.  I had 14 on the old server.  I got a better ping back then, tho.  So it doesn't always effect it, it just can if you know what i mean.

what are things i can try to reduce my ping.  I dont know much.  I have a linksys router here... at home i had a POS one.  routers have firewalls, right? but is it smart to turn it off
