Unfortunately, there is very little you can do to improve ping.  The vast majority of your connection is outside of your own network.  Almost all home router do something called NAT firewall.  Network Address Translation.  While this adds a hop, it is a less than 1 millisecond (1 ping) hop, and the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.  please, if you can turn your router's firewall off, DON'T.  Anti viruses and software based firewalls can add to lag, tho.  If you have a NAT firewall router, you can turn off any software firewalls safely.  Anti-viruses are more of a user choice, tho.  If you browse the web chances are you'll run across a virus at some point.

Anomaly:  yes - but you still have to make sure your wireless connection is secure from people driving by or in your neighborhood.  That is a different part of security that has nothing to do with firewalls.

Jader and DW:  The hops are counted on the left side of the screen.

basic encryption always does the trick.  and it's perfectly legal to use some else's internet if it's not secured, but as soon as it's secured it's off limits.

meph: well i have mine locked/password protected. if thats what you mean.

dawg: basic encryption?  would that be something to do with my router or windows? my router is pretty hard core as far as mainstream features go.

just in case anyone is thinking a higher d/l speed means less ping think again.i just doubled mine to 10 and ping was unaffected.i went from 5mbps to 10 and my upload stayed the same.it was only $5 more so wth.

Very true.  I believe that ping depends mostly on the routing, traffic and noise your data packets encounter between you and the host.

I've got 21 hops to the server.  My ping went up when the new server came on line.  I used to be in the 60's, now I'm almost always in the 90's.

Now that Jader is getting closer to Dallas, his ping is going up.  Welcome to the club.

Only $5 for double the bandwidth?  Wow, I wish my ISP offered that deal, that's amazing.

I'm in Charlotte, NC and I only have 14 hops to tf2.killazinc.net
