meph: well i have mine locked/password protected. if thats what you mean.

dawg: basic encryption?  would that be something to do with my router or windows? my router is pretty hard core as far as mainstream features go.

d-link 655: http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=530

You would set that up on the router, it would be either WEP or WPA or WPA-II, It's pretty much a key you enter on your router that you would also then enter on your PC to access the network, so yeah it's kind of like a password.

I've got 21 hops to the server.  My ping went up when the new server came on line.  I used to be in the 60's, now I'm almost always in the 90's.

Now that Jader is getting closer to Dallas, his ping is going up.  Welcome to the club.

wait... when did the server change?  was this before my times...  Yeah i was noticing yours and mine ping were about the same.

I think you were here for it, jader.  Most people weren't effected since it was a Dallas to Dallas change.  You may not have noticed, other than the site itself was down for a little bit as we moved stuff over.

sounds like they are offering a cable modem with a built-in router.  Its up to you, man.  Just make sure that you either secure that wireless connection or figure out how to shut it off.

basic encryption always does the trick.  and it's perfectly legal to use some else's internet if it's not secured, but as soon as it's secured it's off limits.

BS.

It certainly isn't.

Same principle if I leave my house unlocked.  It's still not legal to enter and take stuff.

A very good friend of mine had to plead out to a misdemeanor as part of an investigation for checking his email on an open AP on Lowe's wireless network.  If you're not explicitly authorized, you're not authorized, end of story.

Oh, and to be on-topic here, ping times have nothing to do with overall latency anymore on many cable ISPs.

They're flagging ping packets through the network with a lower priority between you and their connections to the rest of the net.  What this means is that if there's other traffic that needs the pipe, it'll get it ahead of your ping packet, making your ping numbers worse.  There's not a thing you can do about it.

This is one place where DSL does shine, just by the fact of how it works.

Okay, both of you are wrong.  The law regarding open wi-fi is local.  A number of internet companies were trying to force law making open wi-fi illegal, but their effort seems to have mostly failed.  In other words, check the laws of your city and state, there is NO NATIONAL STANDARD.
I do what I like.  You have problem?
