Unless you're having other weird errors, just deal with it.  Is it worth the pain of reformatting?

my discs are all OEM. im not sure if that has anything to do with it but i just use the same key every time.

my Dell disc doesn't even ask for a key.

my disc is OEM to. but when I had the mem prob (endless boot), I had to clear CMOS and all the capacitors: when I booted up, and logged on, it says to register for the genuine advantage.... I had to call MS  but I have to say it went smoothly  ;)  will maybe reformat tonight. will see.

You shouldn't need to reformat that often.  If you do, it just means you're not that great at solving computer problems.... reformatting is the cop-out  :2funny:.  You can usually google an error, or ask around and find a solution on msdn, or use windbg to debug dump files to figure out what is the problem, or at least do a windows repair...

Actually, Farm, it is well known and acknowledged by MS that Windows slows down significantly over time, as well as higher levels of errors as files slowly corrupt.  Reloading every 6 months is the general rule for just about every computer tech i know, including me.  I don't recommend it to normal users until the system starts to truly become unstable, but the simple fact is that reloading often is the only way to keep Windows running at peak efficiency.
It is far better to grasp the universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring. - Sagan

yea, im more of a clean slate kind of guy.  :)

i don't know everything about Xp by any stretch of imagination. but i reformat even if nothing is wrong. i would call it preventive maintenance as opposed to "not being great at solving computer problems"   :P

to me its kind of like changing your car's oil. you do it every so often to avoid larger problems.

if i understood programming more maybe i would feel differently... but yea... other than disc cleaning and defraging every week, i tend to direct my time to the more physical issues about computers. like finding the cheapest way to make things cooler and faster.  ;)

or just set up separate partitions to begin with, and store everything on a separate partition from your OS, then the dreaded backup doesn't pose a threat
