i don't know if there technically a right way to do it. but i always uninstall the old ones first. then restart, clean up my system drive of all the junk and temporary files, restart, defrag and install the new drivers.
You've got to be kidding me. That sounds like something I would say as a joke! Anyway, what exactly do you mean by "clean up my system drive" and is that necessary for just a video driver install?

well I will also recommend to run Driver Cleaner Pro. uninstall old drivers, reboot to safe mode, run driver cleaner, reboot, install new drivers.

You can install over top. Years ago, both Nvidia and ATi had issues with old files and registry entries being left behind by the uninstall process. Now-a-days its extremely rare to experience problems.

The next batch of drivers seem to provide performance increases in a couple of Source engine games.

i just installed a 9500 (1Gb) in my buddies pentium D system and was very impressed. we installed DOOM 3 and it ran silky smooth on Ultra settings. i think he payed $70 for it on newegg.
anyway... im a supreme slacker, i really need to install this driver along with the voltage utility and get some 3Dmark06 scores going. i really hope i can get my shader clock up higher.

I tried to run 3Dmark06 after I installed my new 260 GTX. It won't run on either Vista x64 or W7 x64?

huh.... wounder if its a 64bit thing. ive heard of people complaining about lower scores in Vista than Xp, so im pretty sure its not a Vista thing.
