Haven't used a firewall in years.  NAT is the way to go.  Get a decent router and forget about it until that router breaks in 10 years.

Any good router will last 10 years.  Any good electronics device will last 10 years.  I don't know what you do to your routers, but you should stop doing it.  I have an RT314 that I just replaced.  It still works, just didn't do static IPs the way I wanted it to.  I had an old rack mount D-Link that lasted at least that long before I sold it.  It had even been dropped hard enough to bend one of its 1/4inch steel mounting plates.

I've had my current Linksys for a couple of years now, not to mention the dozens of hubs and switches I've used over the last decade - only one bad brand of which failed me.

I dunno about software firewalls, tho.

I use Eset smart security. Does a Good job. I've also used Trendmicro Security software.

Both feature Anti-Virus as well as a firewall.

id also recommend ESET Nod32.....ive never relied on anti-viruses etc just because they never did a good job at anything other than hog resources and scan while in-game even when set to not do that.  however nod32 rocks.....and it scans everything that runs and blocks EVERYTHING.  i have never had a problem.

i used to like running naked around the net (also because i use a NAT router + bridge + linucks firewall server box) but nod32 is the way to go.

ccleaner is a good tool as well, as well as registry compactor pro.  ccleaner and such are just utilities for removing junk and make your machine run faster (whats not to like about that?).
