Yeah, its really easy.  Boot it, choose the first option when it comes to the white screen with green writing.  It will do the normal Linux ugly boot (Windows does it too, but is covered by that pretty little loading bar).  It will launch the app immediately, load in the main partition and start running without you doing anything.

Odd thing, tho.  It worked fine on my son's machine, but couldn't find the hard drive on another spare machine I had sitting here.

But i like the ugly linux boot. :(

I guess I have to find a Vista Home disc, which I don't have. She has a recovery disc partition, but doesn't that format?

the version of orphcrack failed, of course it was made for XP. I downloaded the tables for vista (433 gigs) but it would not find the directory on the hard drive and I noticed that it was just for dictionary words anyway.

I tried putting the Vista tables with orphcrack XP on a DVD, but the DVD was not bootable. I just found a version of Orphcrack for Vista and I'm going to burn that and bring it over to her place this week.

She thinks the password may come to her in a few days, she only changed it a few days ago. She has no system restore point before then. In the meantime I'm going to try some more options or try to find a Vista CD, her CD-Key is on the bottom of the laptop at least.

On the ophtcrack site Neo linked to, there is a Vista version.  The XP version cannot read the Vista file system encryption.

I could post other softwares, but that'd be damn close to breaking the law. so I think I'll stick with the open source softwares.

Thanks for your help, people. Didn't know it was possible to hack an admin password, but it's worth a shot. Yeah, I didn't see the Vista version until now. Downloaded and burned the ISO a little while ago.

Considering the Common user today, it's too easy to crack a password, and can be done in less than 3 minutes. But that's the average non PC savvy user. Now a person who read up on the security threats or is "above average" will choose a harder password for their home PC. Just think next time you hit up a friends Network, on how many other networks in the area still use the same old user name and password for their routers.

I am not talking about internet password, as that's a totally different ball game. Just PC.

I never use an admin password to login (Windows User account). I use a bios password and use things no one could figure out even if they knew me really well. I used to combine random words together with numbers like "Squarange22" or purposely misspells words with leetspeak, like "h4p1n5t4nc3".
