Turn Off Autorun
« on: November 10, 2005, 09:09:20 am »
This is one of the most important things you can do with your Windows system, and it is literally the FIRST thing I do after a new install.

Your CDs and DVDs should NEVER run without your explicit permission.  How do you know Autorun is turned on?  Pop a CD in your drive.  If you get either an install\play menu, or a window opens asking what to do with the CD, you have Autorun enabled.

Go to this site for specific instructions on how to turn it off.

Turning off autorun has the added feature of making almost all AUDIO CD copyright protections worthless, allowing you to rip the CDs you payed for and own as many times as you want in whatever format you want.

Protect yourself.
It is far better to grasp the universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring. - Sagan

yes, i do the same thing, autorun is aggravating... i hate it when windows wants to automatically do things for me w\o my permission, i try to disable any and all autorun features, as well as power management settings that turn off your monitor hard drive after a certain amount of time. I don't even let it run a screensaver, I run that myself when i want to. Programs running in the background is also a big pet peeve with me, I run virus check \ spyware when I want to check it, Norton used to slow my seystem down to a snails pace.

Background programs are annoying.  I'm always amused when I go to fix a computer and I see 15 icons in the system tray.  Norton is notorious for slowing things down.  I use AVG, which doesn't cause any noticeable slowdown, and it's free.

I use AVG as well

DJ what was that program you let me know about to change all those Windows settings?  I did a clean install and forgot to write it down

tweak UI maybe? I use that one. winpatrol is nice for monitoring rouge programs that want to run in the background and \ or change associations...

Shouldn't they be in a post, PM, or email somewhere?
